In 1990, Dan Markley formed ad hoc PRODUCTIONS, Inc., a multi-dimensional
entertainment company, which creates, develops, produces and finances
a wide range of projects. ad hocs literal definition, created
for the specific purpose at hand, also describes the companys
purpose and philosophy. ad hocs specific purposes include
Broadway and Off-Broadway theatre production and financing, special
event management, documentary video production, and feature film
production.
Dan currently co-produces STOMP, the Off-Broadway sensation,
which also has two international touring companies. He recently
co-produced the Broadway production of DAMN YANKEES, as well
as its two-year National Tour starring Jerry Lewis. Dan also
co-produced Broadways ON THE WATERFRONT, was co-executive
Producer of the Paul Rudnick film JEFFREY, and was an associate
producer on David Mamets play, OLEANNA. He received both
Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations for the Broadway
production of DAMN YANKEES, Obie and Drama Desk Awards for STOMP
and an Olivier Award nomination for the West End production
of OLEANNA. He also received Helen Hayes Award nominations for
both STOMP and DAMN YANKEES.
Dan recently capitalized and manages the Select Entertainment
Fund LP, a specialized hedge fund that invests in theatrical
productions in North America, Great Britain and Australia. Select
Entertainments portfolio includes productions such as
RENT, DE LA GUARD; Matthew Bournes SWAN LAKE, ART, THE
BEAUTY QUEEN OF LEENANE and COMMUNICATING DOORS. Personally,
Dan has participated as an investor in such shows as RENT (North
America and London), ART (London and New York), THE DIARY OF
ANNE FRANK, Matthew Bournes CINDERELLA, FULL GALLOP, and
ANNIE.
On the special events side, ad hoc teamed with Empire Force
Events to produce the largest event ever held at Lincoln Center
for the travel industrys POW WOW 95 convention. Dan has
produced live entertainment and video presentations for EXPO
92 in Seville, Spain (for USIA), the Clinton/Gore Presidential
Inaugural, the Republican National Committee, The American Legion,
Continental Airlines, Coca-Cola, the Chief Executives Organization,
and the Private Sector Council.
In 1991, New York Citys Ticker Tape Parade for Gulf War
veterans (produced by EVENTURES) highlighted ad hocs first
year. For this historic event, reportedly attended by over four
million people. Dan served as senior talent coordinator and
was responsible for assembling the 22,000 parade participants.
In 1990, prior to forming his company, Dan served a presidential
appointment as director of entertainment for the Economic Summit
of Industrialized Nations held in Houston.
After completing a bachelor of fine arts program at Florida
State University in 1982, Dan moved to London on a student work
exchange program. There he worked in the box offices of several
theatres and subsequently landed a position as assistant to
a West End producer. That job lead to a stint with the Edinburgh
Festival Fringe managing venues for a consortium of small theatres.
In 1984, a rare opportunity arose when Dan began consulting
for the USOs famed overseas shows. In 1986 he was named
USOs producer of celebrity entertainment. Within four
years he was senior producer and had toured throughout the world
with dozens of celebrities. These projects included such stars
as Bob Hope, Randy Travis, Pearl Bailey, Lee Greenwood and The
Judds, and reached military audiences in such places as the
Persian Guld, Panama, Korea, Greenland, The Philippines and
Somalia.
Dan is a member of the League of American Theatres and Producers
and serves on the board of directors for Rattlestick Theatre.
As a guest speaker he has lectured for the Commercial Theatre
Institute, Florida State University, Seton Hall University,
Austin College, Fordham College and New York Law School.
Dan is married to Alison Sheehy and they have a daughter, Sarah.
