Dan Carter is a professor and Director of Penn States School
of Theatre and Artistic Director of Pennsylvania Centre Stage.
He was formerly Chair of the Department of Theatre at Illinois
State University and Associate Dean of the School of Theatre at
the Florida State University. He serves on the Commission on Accreditation
for the National Association of Schools of Theatre and is a trustee
of the National Theatre Conference. He is a past recipient of
the Society of American Flight Directors Patrick Crean Award
and served Actors Equity Association for four years as Area
Liaison from the State of Florida. He was Literary Manager for
the Boston Public Theater and Producing Director of the Illinois
Shakespeare Festival. He was Executive Director and co-founder
(with his wife, Dr. Ruby Allen) of the Appalachian Theatre Ensemble.
Dan received his early training at Illinois State
University and San Franciscos American Conservatory Theatre,
served a brief apprenticeship with Houstons Alley Theatre,
and made his professional acting debut in Theatre Company of Bostons
Richard III, starring Al Pacino. He was a free lance theatre artist
(actor, director, stage manager, producer, fight director) for
fourteen years before joining the ranks of academia. He has appeared
on stage with Farrah Fawcett, Martin Sheen, Lance Henricksen,
Emilio Estevez, and other notables and appeared in three films
with Burt Reynolds. For Pennsylvania Centre Stage he directed
Man of La Mancha and Death of A Salesman (starring George Dzundza)
and played Zach in A Chorus Line.
Dan served one year as assistant baseball coach
for Illinois Wesleyan University. He batted second and played
left field for the 1992 over-40 baseball National Champion Tallahassee
Classics.
